On July 14, 2002 the City of Los Angeles witnessed a “Brand New Day” in the life of the historical landmark church Angeles Temple. This new renovation maintained the original beauty and history of the 1923 architecture, but added a 21st century flair with state of the art technology.

AMT Systems, Inc. was contracted by McCormick Construction on a design-build basis to implement the consultant’s design and performance specification based on a defined budget from the Church. AMT worked with the Worship Pastor Dave Hanley and the consultant to find over $250,000 in value engineered budget savings.

A majority of the audio equipment provided in this installation is currently being used by touring acts throughout the country. Worship levels rival those found in contemporary music concert environments. Dave Hanley says, “We are more than pleased with the capabilities of the audio system. It’s perfect for the room, and I really couldn’t ask for more.”

The visual imagery is very apparent. Three projection screens are used for image magnification, computer graphics and custom DVD video loops. Additionally, a single 10’ x 50’ screen is installed across the back of the platform to display seamless images from three different projectors to display worship lyrics and panoramic images.

The lighting control system was designed with a state of the art digital console, which provides the technical team with a single source digital interface to all conventional and moving light fixtures. This system also includes the latest in 3D modeling software to render three-dimensional views of the sanctuary area. Designers have the ability to build complete scenes off-line and download the design directly to the main control console.

The message that the staff of Angelus Temple is trying to convey to the unsaved is not any different; it’s the delivery. They are geared to reach a technologically savvy generation and have used multimedia in a powerful way to share the gospel.

Project Description

In a continuing development of campus facilities, Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles recently completed a project that included a new Fellowship Hall, renovation of classrooms and offices, upgrades to the existing Sanctuary as well as fiber optic connectivity for campus-wide distribution of signals from the Sanctuary for overflow or other remote needs.

AMT designed the Fellowship Hall systems to provide user-friendly touch screen control of audio, video and screen operations and room combining functions without the need for a dedicated operator. AMT engineered and installed a concert sound system anchored by a Yamaha PM5D sound console with multiple digital mixing points for various stage locations in the room.

Campus classrooms, conference rooms and a fireside room were equipped with video projections systems linked to pre-recorded media playback and easy to operate computer interfaces.

In the Sanctuary AMT designed, furnished and installed a new large format Yamaha PM1D digital mix console, upgraded signal cabling, a remotely controlled multi-camera system and revised the existing line array speaker system to provide improved coverage and overall audio impact and quality.

AMT successfully collaborated with the architect and church leadership to insure installation techniques would not detract from the visual beauty of the spaces. Systems and equipment were integrated into wall designs, soffits or powered lifts for concealing or to allow ease of removal when not in use.

Kevin Watkins reports that the systems have met or exceeded church leadership’s goals for features, ease of use, and quality of presentation. Our continuing relationship with Kevin is summarized in his recent statement,” My association with AMT Systems has been long and productive. I like to say ‘They make me look good’.”

AMT Systems points with great pride to the successful installation of this complex system, and to the satisfaction of this highly visible client serving the greater Los Angeles area from its hilltop on Mulholland Drive overlooking the San Fernando Valley.

Beverly Hills High School, Peters Auditorium – Beverly Hills, CA

Description of project
The Peters Auditorium is home to the Beverly Hills High School drama and music programs which have a reputation for presentation quality of staging and performance representing the school’s ties to the entire Los Angeles and Hollywood entertainment community.

The school district hired consultant Audio Integration Services to analyze the existing room environment and acoustics and make recommendations for a new sound system capable of meeting the varied requirements of the music and drama departments of the school, and of community organizations who also utilize the auditorium throughout the year. Initial budgets were approximately 20% high, so AMT Systems created a value-engineered proposal that kept to the performance specifications while meeting the original budget.

The result is a three- channel line array system using the L-Acoustics dv-DOSC cabinets to form a large center line array and ARSC left and right arrays, combined with subwoofers and stage lip front fill, under balcony fill speakers and balcony delay speakers, all powered by L-Acoustics own LA-series power amplifiers. An Allen and Heath M4000-48 mix console provides access to input panels throughout the stage area equipped with Mass connectors for mic and line level snakes reaching all areas of the main stage. The orchestra pit is similarly equipped for microphone, line and monitor level signals. Signal processing and routing is accomplished through Soundweb DSP and Ashly digital equalizers.

Combined with wired and wireless production intercom, moveable effects speakers, an varied collection of microphones and outboard playback and effects processing equipment, the system provides an outstanding sonic enhancement to the excellent musical and dramatic performances.

Cerritos Millennium Library

Description of Project:
Cerritos Millennium Library is a three-story city facility designed to make twenty-first century technology accessible and easily available in a variety of themed learning center environments throughout the building. It is the first titanium building in the United States, and increases the existing library in size to over 82,000 square feet. The first floor features a children’s area with its own multimedia theater, a 15,000-gallon saltwater aquarium, a replica space shuttle, and a full-size Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. Further down the “Main Street” walkway is the large and comfortable reading room. Other floors feature a large computer resource center, individual study rooms, traditional book collections, large and small conference centers, and other meeting facilities. The new Library is filled with communications and multimedia electronics to meet the variety of known and expected requirements of library patrons who will use the facility not only as a resource center for printed and electronically stored materials, but as a gathering space for community, business and family occasions.

AMT Systems designed, programmed and installed sound and video systems throughout the building to provide motion and graphics projection, surround sound reproduction, playback of audio and video sources, interconnection with building-wide recording and archival storage and computer network facilities, and system access and control via touchscreen for user-friendly operation of even complex systems.

The Children’s Theater and the Third-floor Conference and training rooms all feature LCD graphics-capable video projection, 5.1 surround sound playback speaker systems, playback transports including DVD, VHS, Cassette, and CD, wireless and hard-wired microphone systems with separate sound reinforcement ceiling speaker systems, video cameras tied to recording and archival storage systems, and touchscreen based access and control systems capable of operating not only the sound and video systems, but projection screens, window shades, and lighting systems.

Other rooms feature plasma displays, whiteboards with computer interfaces for storage and recall, and both audio and video conferencing systems capable of interfacing with other facilities at City, State, and World levels.

Crosspoint Church – Chino, CA

Description of Project:
Crosspoint Church recently completed a move to a new worship facility to expand their ministry capabilities in Chino, CA. In support of their ministries, AMT Systems, Inc. worked with Church Technical Staff to provide cutting edge technology with-in the provided by the Building Committee.

The main sound system includes a left, center, right speaker system utilizing components from the highly acclaimed JBL PD series. The speaker system handles a wide dynamic range with a large spatial image. For extended low frequency four EAW dual 15” subwoofers were installed underneath the platform.

The system is controlled by a large format Allen and Heath console which includes dedicated outputs for the main speaker system, eight monitor mixes, recording, FX sends and subwoofer. Digital signal processing and amplifiers are located in backstage racks.

The video system includes two 6500 lumen projectors installed in dedicated rear projection rooms. These screens are controlled from an Analog Way seamless switcher with sources from a dedicated graphics computer, DVD and VCR. The video control booth includes source and preview/program output monitors.

The Sanctuary lighting system provides 96 dual channel dimming modules for house and stage control of standard PAR and ellipsoidal fixtures plus a half dozen robotic ellipsoidal motion lights, all operable from either a large format 400 channel ETC Expression controller or from the PC-based system programming and operations computer.

Grace Baptist Church – Santa Clarita, CA

The new 2200 seat Worship Center at Grace Baptist Church is a state-of-the-art facility designed to support the current campus ministries with the infrastructure to expand with the growth of the Church.

The Grace Baptist hilltop campus, begun in the mid-nineties after the church outgrew its original site in historic Placerita Canyon area of the Santa Clarita Valley, now features a sizeable office and classroom facility, a conference center facility, the new Worship Center, an outdoor amphitheatre, and sufficient parking for its active all-day schedule of activities.

AMT Systems began its association with Grace Baptist during the construction phase of the first building at the new site – a multi-room conference center that served as a temporary worship space during the first years on this new site. The design provides a large open space divisible into five ballrooms served by individually controllable ceiling speaker systems in each ballroom that are combined with a centralized exploded cluster system that is used when the entire space is opened for an event. Video presentation is also available in this facility.

The sound system in the new Worship space is a remarkable utilization of both analog and digital signal technology to provide outstanding reinforcement of the varying requirements of the church’s contemporary, blended, and tradition worship services A Yamaha PM1D large format mix console is digitally connected to the PC-based MediaMatrix digital signal processing and routing electronics which provide signal to matrixed left, center and right channel main speaker clusters as well as balcony delays, front fill speakers, and subwoofers.
The Worship Center video system is centrally controlled by a matrixed router with seamless outputs feeding a high light output LCD projector on a 26 foot wide rear projection screen above the rear of the platform and a series of lobby plasma screens. Additional router outputs feed stage monitors and an MATV system for additional rooms in the building.

Grace Community Church – Sun Valley, CA

Description of Project:
This well-known landmark church located in the San Fernando Valley is the center of a large campus on Roscoe Boulevard. Pastor- Teacher John MacArthur is also President of the Master’s College.

AMT Systems was commissioned to re-engineer the existing sound system for improved coverage, intelligibility and gain before feedback. The results of our redesign work include greatly improved choral and music reinforcement in all 3,000 seats and a significant reduction of the unacceptable reflections off the side and rear walls. AMT was pleased to work with Minister of Music Clayton Erb on this project.

AMT Systems also designed, furnished and installed a video projection system featuring catwalk-mounted LCD projectors and rear projection screens providing images for the seating flanking the platform near the front wall, left and right. Sight lines to the platform from these seating areas are compromised by the viewing angle and the physical construction dimensions of the platform. The addition of these screens has played an important role in improving the sense of participation at service for those seated here.

AMT Systems completed a sound system design and installation for the Chapel on the Grace Community Campus. The interior of this popular wedding venue was renovated from floor to ceiling with new architectural lighting, all new interior finishes, and a new full range sound system consisting of JBL main and delay clusters fed from QSC power amplifiers and Biamp digital signal processing and routing electronics. The system was designed to accommodate all of the spoken word requirements with wired and wireless microphones systems as well as floor box and wall input panels to fulfill the requirements of contemporary music ensembles and soloists.

Project Description

The landmark Granada Theatre on State Street in downtown Santa Barbara has been almost completely re-constructed to serve the community as a performing arts venue for concerts, drama, theatrical presentations and more.

AMT Systems accepted the opportunity to provide our construction engineering and production services on a much accelerated installation timeframe to complete renovation on time and within budget. To do so meant literally compressing a three month installation schedule into less than a month.

Granada Theatre now features a state-of-the-art audio system utilizing Yamaha’s PM1D flagship digital mixing console and processing from multiple Dolby Lake digital signal processors. The speaker systems consist of a concert level Martin line array speaker technology, a separate proscenium speech-only reinforcement system, and surround sound for on-screen presentations. A LCS electronic acoustic enhancement system serves to augment or revise the existing room acoustical environment from multiple preset configurations. A multi-channel production communication intercom system was included throughout the building from the catwalks to the new subterranean dressing and green rooms, and connectivity and cabling for touring acts to employ their own portable systems.

AMT established a strong working relationship with the project general contractor Melchiori Constructors, and with the project multi-media consultant Kyle Ridenour of McKay Conant Hoover to assure that the details required to put these systems in place quickly and accurately were understood and accomplished. Opening night, planned months in advance, was an on-time success and the theatre now serves the community from its historic location with its very modern 21st Century media systems.

Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church – San Dimas, CA

Description of project
Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church is located in San Dimas, California. The soaring architectural design provides a quiet spaciousness appropriate for the worship space, with large clerestory windows and semi-circular seating sloping from the Narthex to the altar platform.

AMT Systems designed and installed an primary speaker cluster and a delay speaker ring to provide even coverage of the large main seating area. Cry room, Narthex, and interior cloistered walkways are covered by distributed ceiling and surface mounted speakers. An AMX touchscreen system is programmed with presets controlling both the hard-wired and wireless microphones providing spoken word reinforcement and a separate multi-channel mixer that serves the various musical ensembles in the choir area.

In-ground and Community Wet series outdoor speakers provide coverage of the entrance gathering space, and the system allows sound from church services to be heard in this area, or this outdoor system can be used separately from outdoor mic inputs. As the planned Parish Hall and Admin buildings are completed at a future date, this gathering space speaker system is designed to expand to cover the entries to these buildings as well as to an outdoor labyrinth meditation walkway.

Lancaster Baptist Church

Description of Project:
AMT Systems designed and installed an audio and video projection system to meet the needs of this growing congregation and the on-campus West Coast Baptist College. The systems provides support for the various musical demands of the weekly worship service including a 200+ voice choir, a 20 piece orchestra, and a variety of smaller ensembles and soloists. The facility is also used for daily Chapel services and as a large classroom lecture venue.

The heart of the system is a new Yamaha M7CL-48 channel digital mixing console which provides the system operators the flexibility to save and instantly recall complete operational settings through memory presets on the console.

AMT designed the speaker system to provide a spacious sound for the choir and orchestra while maintaining excellent speech intelligibility for the spoken word. The speaker complement includes JBL full range cabinets in left center and right clusters, delay speakers for the balcony seating, and as under-balcony fills. Yamaha front fills and monitor speakers complete the speaker system. System signal processing routing is performed by a MediaMatrix digital signal processing system.

AMT also designed and installed a dual-screen rear projection video display with screens flanking the platform and used for both graphics and motion video presentations.

City Council Chambers – Lawndale, CA

Description of project
The small community of Lawndale, California is located just east of the 405 freeway, south of Los Angeles International Airport. This thriving part of greater Los Angeles is home to a melting pot of ethnicities, and guided by a dedicated group of council members and staff dealing with the everyday business of urban living.

A major renovation of an existing building housing the council chambers and many of the city services made possible a series of sweeping architectural improvements that updated the building inside and out. The chamber facelift included a complete new ceiling and wall treatment, public seating arrangement, and a totally revised and improved council dais and staff work area.

AMT Systems worked with the city planners and the architect to provide a system of sound and video components to serve both the public audience and the community broadcast service. The system includes individual microphones with membrane mute switches and indicator LEDs for all dais and staff positions, touch sensitive voting panels, and individual color monitors for each dais seat with both motion and graphics capabilities. A touch screen-based control system operates the speaker timer, request-to-speak, and voting programs, all custom engineered and written by AMT staff personnel. Duplicate touch screens allow either the Mayor or City Clerk to operate these functions, as well as to control video projection from a ceiling mounted LCD projector for playback of pre-recorded materials or display of graphics from a document camera or computer. The dais and public access lectern microphones are controlled by automatic mixer channels for sound reinforcement within the chamber to the audience area. Direct outputs of the dais microphones as well as ceiling mounted audience microphones provide isolated and independent control of audio for the broadcast audio engineer to use with video from three remotely controlled video cameras that feed a live signal from the chamber via microwave to the local cable access channel.

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels – Los Angeles

Description of Project:
For many years, a relatively small building – St. Vibiana’s in downtown Los Angeles – served as the Cathedral Church for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, until the earthquake of 1994 made it unusable. Cardinal Roger Mahony chose to begin construction of a new and imaginative Cathedral complex to become the hub of the Catholic Communities of greater Los Angeles, featuring a new conference center, a rectory, a large plaza, and the visually stunning new Cathedral of Our Lady of The Angels. It was dedicated in September 2002. Cardinal Mahony referred to its location on the fabled El Camino Real in his dedication homily, and expressed his hope that it will become a place for all peoples to gather in peace.

The Cathedral sound system is primarily a digital signal processor-based multi-microphone mixer controlling the variety of wireless and hard-wired spoken word microphone sources and routing them to a series of down-firing speaker elements contained within large brass trumpet-style lighting fixtures throughout the nave, transept, and baptistery areas. A separate programmable digital mix console controls the music system portion of the sound system. When required it can be operated from one of three separate locations. A separate system serves only the baptistery area near the main doors of the building.

The Conference Center building will serve both the parish community of the Cathedral, and all of the archdiocesan parishes throughout the LA basin, with large and small meeting rooms, kitchen banquet facilities, and a variety of office areas. The meeting rooms are all equipped with touch screen-based sound reinforcement systems, operating independently or tied together in several room-combine variations. These systems provide local access and control of playback electronics, and microphone level adjustments. Paging and playback systems serve many of the hall and assembly areas in the building.

The Plaza area includes sound systems in Colonnade and Trellis walkways, connected through the Conference Center to the Cathedral system.

This landmark building has become a highlight within the already diverse architectural symbols of downtown LA recognized around the world, and more importantly, will serve as a visible sign of the spirit of the Catholic Church in Los Angeles.

Peoples Church – Fresno, CA

Description of Project:
People’s Church serves the rapidly growing Central Valley community of Fresno California from an ever-growing campus that includes an auditorium providing seating for well over 2000. This interior renovation not only expanded seating capacity, but features an AV system designed by AMT’s Engineering staff and the Church’s technical team to provide concert level sound reinforcement and high quality video projection to enhance the worship experience at each service, and to expand the capabilities for the very popular and excellently produced drama presentations.

AMT Systems designed and installed an EV X-Array left, center, right speaker system that includes flown subwoofers in each cluster as well as additional low frequency cabinets on the platform. Peoples Church executive pastor/music minister Doug Holck, along with the church’s engineers Henry Grimmus and Jeff Salley, followed AMT’s recommendations for a new Yamaha PM1D digital front-of-house mix console, EAW subwoofers, EV downfill and under-balcony delay speakers to improve system operational flexibility and functionality as well as improved speaker coverage of seating nearest the platform and under the deep balcony area.

Because set decorations for the regularly scheduled drama presentations make access to the platform floor boxes difficult or impossible, AMT provided large wall panels that duplicate the floor box input points so all of the 80+ lines remain usable. The platform inputs terminate at backstage isolated mic splits, providing signal to the house, to the recording studio and for a future platform monitor console.

AMT Systems also provided Yamaha a DM2000 digital recording console and Tascam multi-track recorders for the new studio booth directly behind the platform that can access 48 channels from the auditorium as well as lines from its own recording studio downstairs. The booth mixer and the house PM1D are connected with multiple AES digital signal lines as well. The church’s excellent music program makes extensive use of the recording system for commercial release and live internet broadcasts.

The platform video projection system was also upgraded to three rear projection screens – two flanking the platform and one centered above the choir performance area. Five additional video projectors provide images on five screens for balcony seating. A Vista Spyder video processor allows access to the multiple live cameras as well as the graphics presentation signals for display on the multiple screens.

The Chapel sound system features a Yamaha M7CL digital mix console and is equipped with Aviom personal monitor system components for the music team. Two SLS 10-cabinets line arrays flank the platform to provide full range concert sound fidelity in this popular wedding chapel setting, assuring very high quality reinforcement of the speech and music elements of all the services held in this beautiful room.

Saint Peter Claver Catholic Church

Description of Project:
St. Peter Claver Catholic Church is located in Simi Valley, California. The design pays homage to the history of the California Missions, with large wooden rough-hewn entry doors, tile paver floors, open beams, and windows set into deep recesses to create a sense of thick mission-style walls.

This church building features transept and nave seating that is nearly equal, a children’s area not isolated behind glass but rather acoustically isolated within a low ceiling area at the side of the nave, and a large narthex with a free-standing baptistry font.

The open beam ceiling created a challenge for speaker placement to provide even coverage of the space, and AMT used both a primary cluster and delay speaker ring to resolve this issue. Hard-wired and wireless microphones provide spoken word reinforcement for the liturgy, while a separate multi-channel mixer and local floor monitor system serves the music groups in the choir area by providing them access to controls to adjust for vocal blend and instrument reinforcement through the main system..

A large gathering space outside the building has been equipped with connectors for microphones and portable speakers to be added to the system when celebrations require sound reinforcement in this area.

Saint Stanislaus Church – Modesto, CA

Project Description
Saint Stanislaus Church is a 1300 seat cruciform Sanctuary located in California’s Central Valley, serving a large agricultural community in Modesto. The building features arched arcades and a large dome above the altar platform, and is part of a master-planned parish site that will continue to expand to include a Family Life Center, schools and a new rectory. The architecture by the renowned firm of Hyndman and Hyndman merges traditional forms with a contemporary worship environment by using California mission style materials for entry access and other accents throughout the church.

AMT Systems was selected to design and install the sound system, and worked in harmony with the design team to provide highly intelligible and even coverage of the congregation seating areas for the spoken word liturgy while also providing separate multi-microphone capabilities for the various musical ensembles which vary from traditional to ethnic and contemporary.

Touch screens in the Vesting and Work Sacristies provide system operational access and control using AMT custom programmed menu pages to activate and operate a digital audio signal processing and routing electronics system that controls a multi-cabinet speaker cluster located above the altar platform and below the dome as well as distributed speakers covering walkways at each transept, the expansive Narthex area, and outdoor areas.

Skyline Church is one of the best examples of collaboration in creating a facility that helps to communicate the message being presented.

AMT Systems was part of team of designers and engineers that met with the Church and in 4 days helped to create a full system design with complete costing for the entire project. The process could not have been completed without exceptional team work and trust from all parties involved. The Church provided direction to all team members and each discipline provided design input and costing as needed. When coordination issues arouse they were solved immediately by all and then the project moved forward. The cost savings in design fees alone was extremely significant.

The technology in the system was just as innovative as the process in which the design took place. A 30’ wide x 9.5’ high projection screen was installed on a gantry to allow the center image to move to multiple positions on the stage with-in the service. Portrait format 9’ wide x 16’ high projection provides image magnification in a manner that is extremely unique and effective in providing a more intimate feeling to the 2000 seat space.

The goal of the sound system was to provide even, highly intelligible coverage for intimate speech communication to concert level music reinforcement. The system provided exactly what was predicted in the engineering models and the client received great value in cost versus performance.

The facility also features systems for a Chapel that has been designed to look like an old traditional chapel with stain glass windows and wooden pews. However, this old looking chapel features large 80” LED displays with a modern speaker system. The venue is used weekly as an overflow to the main space and with a large access to the Atrium it is very inviting when you enter the facility.

The main atrium is a great space as your enter the facility with easy access to the Chapel, Café and main worship space. A number of displays in the space allow for connection to the main worship
space during service or as digital signage before service or during the week. The Atrium also includes tech systems for small informal events that can take place in a unique setting.

The Café was designed as a great place to connect with people and socialize before or after services. Tech systems allow monitoring of the service, digital signage information or miscellaneous content during the week. Inputs are available to allow for small coffee shop style music events as well.

The Family Room is one of the most unique spaces available for families with small children during the weekend services. A 35’ sectional couch is available with large LED displays that allow viewing on three walls, but will connecting with other families and keeping the children in an area that can be monitored. Connections are also available so the room can be used for small teaching events.

The facility also includes a broadcast wing that allows services to be streamed to the internet or
programs can be created during the week for a regular radio broadcast.

Project Description:
This Contemporary Christian Church completed a major construction project resulting in this large auditorium seating 3,000 and featuring a high level of multimedia presentation systems and concert level sound for a vibrant, active congregation.
Worship services feature a large praise band and worship team, featured soloists, and special guests, and congregational singing and participation is enhanced with visual presentations on a large center screen as well as rear projection screens flanking the platform. Regularly scheduled concert events feature well known touring groups.

The sound system features three main clusters, each consisting of ten EAW KF series speakers, plus downfills, side fills, flown and under-platform subwoofers, and delay speakers for balcony and under balcony fill. The QSC amplifier complement for the system provides an available 94 kilowatts of power to operate the system at full concert level.

Literally hundreds of input connectors in floor boxes and wall panels are connected through mic splits for front of house, recording and a portable platform monitor console. Front of house mix position features a Yamaha PM1D 96 channel console, providing feeds to an Aviom personal monitor system on the platform which is augmented by wedge monitors as needed.

A three-camera system can be used for image magnification, along with graphics and motion video playback fed to the three platform screens as well as two additional screens at the rear of the auditorium displaying the same image for those on the platform. A downstage center plasma display completes the video display system.
